How to Check if a Brampton Basement Is Registered

Steps for reviewing City registration, permits, plans and the actual condition of a Brampton basement apartment.

Planning note: This guide provides general information, not a property approval or substitute for advice from the City or the appropriate qualified professional.

Do not rely only on a real estate listing, separate entrance or previous owner's statement. Verify registration and determine whether the current basement still matches the approved condition.

Check the City ARU Information

The City publishes information about registered Additional Residential Units and provides contacts for the registration process. Use official records for property decisions.

Review Building Permits

A permit record can show approved work, but confirm whether inspections and the final process were completed. An application or issued permit does not automatically prove current registration.

Compare Plans With the Basement

  • Number and location of rooms
  • Kitchen and bathroom layout
  • Entrances, windows and doors
  • Mechanical room and shared areas
  • Later additions or alterations

Check Rental Licensing Separately

ARU registration and the Residential Rental Licence are distinct. A unit can have registration history while the owner still needs to satisfy the current annual rental operating requirement.

Before Buying or Renting

Ask for the registration, approved plans, permit status and rental licence. Buyers should use appropriate legal, real estate and professional due diligence.
