ARU Registration vs. Brampton Rental Licensing

A clear comparison of the legal unit registration process and the separate annual rental operating licence.

Planning note: This guide provides general information, not a property approval or substitute for advice from the City or the appropriate qualified professional.

ARU registration and Residential Rental Licensing are connected but separate. One addresses the legal additional unit, while the other governs operation of qualifying rental housing.

ARU Registration

The additional unit follows the applicable application, permit, inspection and final registration process. Confirm the actual property appears in the City records and matches the approved condition.

Residential Rental Licence

The current program requires qualifying owners renting one to four units to obtain an annual licence before operating. The City describes applications and renewals as free under the current program, but owners should verify current terms.

Order Matters

  • Confirm the property configuration
  • Register applicable ARUs
  • Prepare insurance and property documents
  • Complete landlord education requirements
  • Submit the rental licence application
  • Post, maintain and renew the licence

Ongoing Responsibilities

Rental operation includes insurance, approved sleeping rooms, legal parking, property maintenance, tenant information and continued fire-safety maintenance.

If the ARU Is Not Rented

The City currently provides a non-rental declaration process. Obtain the current form and instructions directly from the licensing program.

Verify Current Rules

Programs, forms, fees and requirements can change. Use the official City pages rather than an old contractor article or saved checklist.
