Planning a Separate Basement Entrance in Brampton

Property, survey, structural, drainage, stair and permit questions to resolve before building a below-grade basement entrance.

Planning note: This guide provides general information, not a property approval or substitute for advice from the City or the appropriate qualified professional.

A below-grade entrance combines exterior site work with an opening in the house foundation. Its location should be designed before excavation begins.

Check the Property

  • Legal survey and property lines
  • Side-yard width and grading
  • Utilities and exterior equipment
  • Adjacent foundations and structures
  • Conservation authority or other approvals

Coordinate the Interior Layout

The exterior door must arrive at a usable interior location with appropriate headroom, circulation and unit relationship.

Design the Foundation Opening

Foundation material, footing depth, wall loads and the proposed door size determine the structural detail. Do not assume an existing window can be enlarged without design.

Control Water

The stairwell collects rain and snow. Drainage, waterproofing, grading and maintenance must work together at the bottom landing and foundation wall.

Build Safe Exterior Access

  • Consistent stairs and landing
  • Guards and handrails
  • Exterior lighting
  • Door threshold and weather protection
  • Snow and ice maintenance

Remember the Complete Unit

A separate entrance is only one part of a legal basement apartment. It does not replace the remaining permit, safety, registration or licensing requirements.
